It's been a few days since I've updated everyone on the transmission tuning reviews. I had a busy weekend and didn't get to dedicate too much time to the process.
Yesterday we did a "health check" on the transmission. We dropped the pan and verified we weren't seeing anything abnormal. - I had mentioned in a previous post talking with Kory about a noise I was hearing in the transmission and what sounded like a hydraulic bypass type noise and I finally had a chance to get a pressure gauge on the transmission. With the ratiotek prx kit I'm reading 150 psi at idle in park. I've had experience in rebuilding transmissions and that seemed pretty high, as factory pressure should be around 90.
I decided to reach out to ratiotek about my concerns and steve explained that the pressure is right where it should be with that kit, and the noise I was hearing was exactly what I thought it was. The EPC replacement valve in the kit is a steel sleeve with a check ball. - They've since redesigned it due to the exact noise I've been hearing and the new one is aluminum with a balance spring system. They were kind enough at no cost to me to ship me the new EPC valve kit.
I also had ordered a pressure transducer that I'm going to log line pressure rise as I know too much pressure can do serious damage. These things have a very high line pressure stock. Kory said they have noticed the pump start to whine around 400psi. Ratiotek said I should see a 65psi linear increase over stock pressure with the kit I'm using.
I've noticed that in high idle, I've got pump whine on the current tune and it's enough for me to be concerned a little. Fortunately these pumps are easily replaceable in the event of pump failure.
Also, due to the amount of tunes through this truck, I've now found a great way to make sure that my logs are consistent when comparing. My autel allows me to easily reset the adaptive pressures, and I can monitor the relearn to make sure it's done relearning before I log!
I'll keep working on this and keep you guys all posted!
